What this is:
This is a flowchart for if your landlord is attempting to evict you in the City of Chicago. This assumes that your home is subject to the Chicago Residential Landlord Tenant Ordinance. The City has an online summary available. It is also required to be added onto the end of any lease you sign in the City. This flowchart is not meant to replace an actual housing attorney. It is not legal advice. This is written from the tenants viewpoint, not the landlords. It will not cover all possible situations.
Use This If:
- You are unfamiliar with the eviction process in Chicago.
- You are panicked, nervous, or afraid.
- You and your landlord cannot settle things amicably.
- You want to assert your rights under CRLTO.
Do Not Use This If:
- You have a formal, written agreement to resolve the issue with the landlord.
- You intend on destroying the place.
- You are an attorney.
