What this is:
This is a flowchart for if you’re being approached by the police. This chart assumes that you are not presenting a threat to anyone, armed, or actively engaged in criminal activity. This chart does not cover all possible avenues for a police encounter, but shows common procedural paths. This chart applies only to police in the USA.
Use this if:
- You want to be prepared for police encounters.
- You have not called the police yourself.
Do not use this if:
- You are driving a motor vehicle.
- You want to use this instead of an attorney.
- You are in the middle of committing a crime.
Important Notes:
- It is well-documented that police interactions tend to go differently if you are Black. Because of that, the choices and consequences are different. This particular chart cannot speak definitively on those differences.
